During the summer months, bucks stay lean and grow their velvet, usually hanging out with other young males.

As pre-rut rolls in, they bulk up, harden their antlers, and their necks thicken — gearing up for the rut showdown.

This isn’t just a body change; it’s nature’s way of prepping them for the season that really counts.Image attachmentImage attachment

How does nutrition actually impact antler development? ⬇

In cervid species like whitetail and fallow deer, nutritional intake impacts antler growth throughout the developmental period. Younger bucks typically require higher protein levels (around 20%) for optimal development, while older bucks need around 16%. Minerals like calcium and phosphorus are crucial for growth as deer draw these from their bones during growth, and require replenishment from their nutritional intake.

Dietary imbalances can lead to smaller antlers, decreased bone density, and delayed shedding of velvet.

We are proud to support premium herds like Keeper Ranch with superior quality feeds like Antlers Plus Deer and Exotics to support the overall health and development of whitetail deer and exotics.
